One of the problems of living in a large metropolitan city is that you become oblivious to the sights, the sounds, the commotion that’s going on around you. Ignoring the constant hum of the city is how to get through the day without being constantly overstimulated.
It happens every day, though: in addition to city sounds, people step into oncoming traffic with their earbuds in as they are talking on the phone. I’ve pulled more than one stranger back onto the curb by the back of their coat as a yellow cab accelerates through the intersection to beat the red light.
That’s where this month’s snippet comes from. Two girls after school, coming down the steps of the CVS, headed for the crosswalk when the light was changing. “Amber.. AMBER!” one of the girls hollered. Thankfully, the girl’s voice cut through the sound in the other’s earbuds.
Your story this month is about awareness in the city. What are you warning Amber about? What’s she doing? Looking forward to reading your story.
